Managua vs Liberia: Which Airport for San Juan del Sur?

If you are booking a trip to San Juan del Sur, you will hit this fork pretty fast: fly into Managua (MGA) or fly into Liberia (LIR)?

Both get you there. They are not the same trip. MGA puts you in Nicaragua on day one. LIR puts you in Costa Rica first, then you cross a land border to reach the bay.

Here is how I would choose, with the airport names spelled out so you do not book the wrong one.

Managua is MGA. Liberia is LIR.

Managua’s airport is Augusto C. Sandino International Airport. The code on your ticket is MGA. Nicaragua’s airport company, EAAI, runs it. If someone says “the Nicaragua airport,” this is usually what they mean.

Liberia’s airport is Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, also branded Guanacaste Airport. The code is LIR. It sits west of Liberia in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. People also call it Liberia International. Same place.

Do not mix either of those with San José (SJO). That is Costa Rica’s big hub. It is a longer overland trip to San Juan del Sur than MGA or LIR, and it is a different plan.

Fly Managua if you want to stay in Nicaragua

Land at MGA and you clear Nicaraguan immigration at the airport. Then you drive south to San Juan del Sur on Nicaraguan roads. No second border that day.

EAAI’s site has the current notes on arrivals, customs, migration, and car rental desks inside the terminal. Check those pages the week you fly. Hours and document lists move.

On the Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur stay page, the drive from Managua is listed as about two hours. Treat that as a planning range. Capital traffic, rain, and where you are actually sleeping in the SJDS area all change the clock. Confirm with whoever is picking you up, or request a quote on the airport shuttle page.

EAAI also currently publishes a yellow-fever vaccination-certificate note for travelers coming from listed parts of South America and Africa. If that might be you, read it on eaai.com.ni and confirm with the health authority that issued your certificate. Do not guess from a summary.

Fly Liberia if the Costa Rica routing is actually better

LIR can win on fare, schedule, or because you are already spending time in Guanacaste. You enter Costa Rica at Liberia. Getting to San Juan del Sur then means leaving Costa Rica and entering Nicaragua overland.

That same stay page lists the drive from Liberia as about three hours, with the border in that picture. Border queues are the swing factor. A quiet weekday morning and a holiday weekend are not the same trip.

Guanacaste Airport lists car rentals, currency exchange, ATMs, ground transportation, and immigration notes in its passenger guide. Start at guanacasteairport.com.

If you have never done the crossing, our older walk-through, How to Cross the Costa Rica / Nicaragua Border, is useful for the geography. Procedures and fees change. Confirm with official migration sources and your airline the week you fly. A 2020 checklist is not 2026 law.

LIR is also the airport people use for the Guanacaste coast, including Tamarindo. That is a different stay, in a different country. Do not treat Tamarindo and San Juan del Sur as one hotel.

So which one should you book?

Book MGA if you want to clear immigration once, in Nicaragua, and your trip is Nicaragua-only (San Juan del Sur, maybe Granada or León later). You would rather not time a land border on arrival day.

Book LIR if the Liberia flight is meaningfully better for your dates, or you are already in Guanacaste, and you are fine adding a Costa Rica arrival plus a Nicaragua land entry the same day (or the next morning).

There is no universal winner. Compare door to door, not just the airfare screenshot. Your passport rules matter more than a pretty map.

Nicaragua updated visa categories in February 2026 (Disposición No. 002-2026 from the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería). If you last checked the old visa-free lists, check again. Start with INAC’s February 2026 visa-category update, then confirm your own passport with a Nicaraguan consulate or the migration authority before you buy a nonrefundable ticket. Costa Rica has its own rules. Confirm those separately if you use LIR.

Once you are on the bay

San Juan del Sur sits on a crescent of Pacific coast. It is not an airport town. After the transfer, the useful question is which beach you actually want.

Distances on Surf Ranch’s stay page (not a live traffic app): Remanso about 5 km, Maderas about 9 km, town beach about 3 km. Those are property-to-beach figures. They are not a promise every taxi takes five minutes, and they are not a surf forecast.

Everyday travel here is in Spanish, UTC−6, with U.S. dollars and Nicaraguan córdobas both in use. Power on the official stay notes is 120V / 60Hz. Ask your bank about cards and cash before you rely on a blog for that.

If you are staying at Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur

Surf Ranch Resort is one hotel in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. Not the Popoyo property. Not the Tamarindo property. Check-in is 2:00 p.m. Check-out is noon.

On property: pool with a swim-up bar, waterslide, restaurant and bar, skatepark, gym, climbing wall, volleyball. Walk-up day pass entry is free. Large groups pay $15 USD per person in advance, and that amount goes to consumibles (an open tab).

Overnight All Inclusive is three meals plus beer, rum drinks, juice, soda, and coffee, plus the swim-up and the gym. It is not unlimited drinks. It is not every amenity. Climbing and surf lessons are not included. Ask about those separately.

Before you click buy

Write down the code: MGA or LIR. Not “the Nicaragua airport.” Not “Liberia, the country.”

Check your passport against current Nicaragua rules, and Costa Rica’s if you use LIR. February 2026 changed the Nicaragua side for a lot of travelers.

If you fly LIR, plan time and documents for a land border, not only an airport arrival. If you might need a yellow-fever certificate, confirm that too.

Then get a transfer or rental quote for your exact date, time, and headcount. Do not lock a number from an old webpage.

San Juan del Sur is straightforward once you are on the water. The airport choice is the part that rewards ten minutes on official pages. Start with EAAI for Managua and Guanacaste Airport for Liberia, then pick the flight that actually gets you to the bay with the least drama.
