Your First Week in San Juan del Sur: A 2026 Planner

You already made the three forks. Airport: Managua (MGA) or Liberia (LIR). Town: San Juan del Sur or Popoyo. Beach: Remanso or Maderas.

This is the fourth piece. What does a first week in San Juan del Sur actually look like once those decisions are on the calendar?

It does not look like a resort island. It looks like a bay town with a harbor, a hill, a walkable center, and surf beaches that are not the strip in front of the malecón. If you treat “SJDS” as one pin, you will spend a morning at the wrong sand and an afternoon wondering where the town went.

Day one is a transfer, not a surf session

San Juan del Sur is a municipality on Nicaragua’s Pacific, in the Rivas department. Wikipedia puts it about 140 km south of Managua. It is not next to the airport.

On Surf Ranch’s San Juan del Sur destination page (live 1 Sep 2026), the planning drive from Managua (MGA) is about two hours. From Liberia (LIR) it is about three hours, border included. The shuttle page currently lists San José (SJO) as about five to six hours. Those are property copy, not a live traffic app. Rain, a late plane, and the Peñas Blancas queue all move the clock. Confirm the week you fly.

MGA keeps you in Nicaragua on arrival day. LIR puts you in Costa Rica first. Then you cross into Nicaragua overland. That is a different first afternoon. Our older border walk-through is useful for the geography. Procedures, fees, and hours change. I am not printing any of those here. Confirm with official migration sources and your passport the week you go. Nicaragua updated visa categories in February 2026. The airport piece walks that. Start there, not with a 2020 video.

If the Costa Rica side of the trip is Tamarindo, write that down as a destination, not as a hotel mix-up. Tamarindo is Guanacaste. LIR is the usual airport for that coast. It is not San Juan del Sur. It is not Popoyo. Two countries, two towns. Do not book one because the brand name showed up on both.

Build slack into day one. If you land after lunch, the week starts with a shower and a walk, not a lesson. Check-in at Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur is 2:00 p.m. Check-out is noon. Reception is currently listed as 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., English and Spanish. Ask them that morning if you need a taxi or a beach run. I am not printing taxi fares. They move.

The town is the base. The surf beaches are a short drive.

San Juan del Sur wraps a crescent bay. Wikipedia still describes a place that grew from fishing and shipping into tourism. You can see that from the harbor. Pangas and sport boats share the same water. The Christ of the Mercy statue sits on the northern hill, 134 meters above sea level, dedicated 12 April 2009, with a small chapel at the foot. That is the landmark people point at from the beach. Confirm access, hours, and any entry fee the week you go. Older blogs printed walk times and dollar gates. I am not repeating those. They age.

On the destination page, the town beach is about 3 km from the resort, the closest of the listed strips. It is a bay beach with a town behind it. Good for a swim, a sunset, or a day you do not want a surf shuttle. Not a substitute for Remanso or Maderas if the morning is about a lesson.

Most first weeks need one surf beach, not three

Write the beach on a note in your phone before you pack the board bag.

Remanso is south. About 5 km / about 5 minutes from the resort on the current destination page. Beginner-to-intermediate beach break, year round, in that planning copy. The first-party packages page currently puts 5-night and 7-night surf-package lessons at Remanso, not at Maderas. If you are a first-timer or a mixed group, that is the sand the hotel is pointing you at. Still check a live report the morning you go.

Maderas is north. About 10 km / about 10 minutes on the same destination page. Older stay-page copy on this site used 9 km. Use the current destination figure as a planning number, then ask whoever is driving. The destination page describes Maderas as intermediate to advanced, with lefts and rights, and notes it as best from April to October. Planning language. Not a swell chart. If that is the beach you came for, go there. Do not split the difference at town beach.

Playa Hermosa is about 8 km / about 8 minutes on the same list. Nicaragua has more than one Hermosa. Confirm the pin.

The destination page currently describes the coastal highway as paved to Remanso and to Maderas. Roads in this part of Rivas change with crews and rain. Confirm the week you go. If you are still choosing a town, stop and go back to San Juan del Sur or Popoyo. A first week in SJDS is not a first week in Tola.

A real day, not a brochure hour-by-hour

I am not going to invent your Tuesday. Here is the rhythm first-timers actually fall into once they stop treating the bay as one beach.

Morning: one surf beach, or town beach if the week is not about a lineup. Leave slack for the drive. A lesson time is not a suggestion. In the green months, a shower can slow the road.

Midday: it is hot. Wikipedia classifies San Juan del Sur as a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw), with a dry season from December to May and a heavy rainy season the rest of the year, about 1,710 mm of rain in a Weatherbase year. That is climate class, not a 2026 forecast. Pack a dry bag anyway if you are in the green months. Our older month-by-month Nicaragua piece is from 2016. Use it for the idea that each month feels different. Do not treat its surf notes as this year’s chart.

Afternoon: town, the hill, or the pool. Families often keep the second half of the day close to water that is not a lineup: town beach, or the hotel pool and waterslide. Couples and friend groups often split. One person wants Maderas. One person wants a coffee on the bay. That is a taxi problem, not a relationship problem. These distances are short on the planning list. They are still opposite directions.

If skate is part of why you came, the on-site skatepark is on the property. It is not a secret second town. It is at the hotel. Ask reception what is open that day. I am not printing a session schedule.

Evening: walk the town. Everyday travel here is in Spanish, UTC−6, with U.S. dollars and Nicaraguan córdobas both in use. Power on the official destination notes is 120V / 60Hz. Confirm cards and cash with your bank. ATMs exist in town. That does not mean the one you walk to is working.

A 5-night stay is not seven full days. A 7-night stay still loses the arrival transfer and the checkout morning. Count surf days, not nights, before you promise anyone in the group “every morning in the water.”

One named extra, if you have a spare morning

If someone in the group says turtles, the named place is Refugio de Vida Silvestre La Flor, a protected area in the municipality of San Juan del Sur. Nicaragua’s environment ministry, MARENA, describes it as 7,349 hectares and a sanctuary for sea turtles. Nesting is seasonal. Whether anything is on the sand the night you go is not a blog promise. Confirm current access, hours, and fees with MARENA or the ranger station before you drive south. I am not printing a córdoba number or a nesting calendar here. Both move.

If nobody wants a wildlife run, skip it. A first week does not need a checklist of thirty stops. It needs one surf beach, one town rhythm, and one spare morning you did not overbook.

If you are staying at Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur

Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur is one hotel in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. Not the Popoyo property. Not Tamarindo. Check-in is 2:00 p.m. Check-out is noon.

On property: pool with a swim-up bar, waterslide, restaurant and bar, skatepark, gym, climbing wall, volleyball. Walk-up day pass entry is free. Large groups pay $15 USD per person in advance, and that amount goes to consumibles (an open tab).

Overnight All Inclusive is three meals plus beer, rum drinks, juice, soda, and coffee, plus the swim-up and the gym. It is not unlimited drinks. It is not every amenity. Write three lines, then pack

Before you zip the bag, write three lines.

First: MGA or LIR. If it is LIR, you are starting in Costa Rica. Tamarindo is a different town on that side of the border, not a backup hotel.

Second: Remanso, Maderas, or town beach. One name. Not “the surf beach.”

Third: how many mornings you actually have after the transfer and before checkout.

That is the week. Airport, town, beach, then the days in between. San Juan del Sur is straightforward once you stop asking it to be a single pin on a map.
