Remanso or Maderas: Which San Juan del Sur Surf Beach?

People pick “the San Juan del Sur surf beach” as if the bay has one lineup. It does not. Remanso sits south of town. Maderas sits north. Different sand, different drive, different typical mix of who shows up with a board.

If you treat them as the same stop, you can spend a morning at the wrong place for the trip you actually booked. Town beach is a third option, and it is not a substitute for either one.

This is the third piece in a 2026 decision series. First you pick an airport: Managua (MGA) or Liberia (LIR). Then you pick a town: San Juan del Sur or Popoyo. Then you pick a beach. The beach choice is not the same as the town choice. San Juan del Sur has more than one strip of Pacific.

Remanso is south of town, and closer

Remanso is the name most first-lesson groups hear. On Surf Ranch’s San Juan del Sur destination page (live 1 Sep 2026), the planning distance from the resort to Remanso Beach is about 5 km, listed as about a 5-minute drive. That is property-to-beach copy, not a live traffic app. Rain, a slow taxi, and where you are actually sleeping all change the clock.

The same page describes Remanso as a beginner-to-intermediate beach break, year round. Treat that as planning language, not a forecast. The hotel currently points first-timers and mixed groups at this sand, not at Maderas.

The destination page currently describes the coastal highway as paved to Remanso and to Maderas. Roads in this part of Rivas change with work crews and rain. Confirm the week you go.

If you are staying at Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur and looking at a surf package, the first-party packages page currently describes 5-night and 7-night surf packages with lessons at Remanso Beach, not at Maderas. Ask for current details on that page. I am not printing prices here. They move.

Maderas is north, and it is not the town beach

Maderas is the name people drop. It is not in front of the malecón. It is not Remanso with a different sign.

On that same destination page, Playa Maderas is about 10 km from the resort, listed as about a 10-minute drive. Older blogs (including an earlier post on this site) have used 9 km. The stay page and the destination page have not always matched. Use the current destination figure as a planning number, then confirm with whoever is driving you.

The destination page describes Maderas as intermediate to advanced, with lefts and rights, year round, and notes it as best from April to October. Again: planning copy, not a swell chart. Check a live report (Surfline, or a shop in town) the morning you go. Local knowledge that day beats a paragraph written in September.

If you specifically want Maderas, go to Maderas. Do not assume the bay in town will feel the same. Do not assume Remanso is a backup with the same peaks. They face different stretches of coast.

Town beach is a third option. Hermosa is another name.

San Juan del Sur’s town beach is the crescent you see from the hill. The destination page lists it at about 3 km from Surf Ranch, the closest of the bunch. It is a bay beach with a town behind it. Useful for a swim, a sunset, or a day you do not want a surf shuttle. Not a substitute for Remanso or Maderas if the point of the morning is a surf beach.

Playa Hermosa is another nearby name, about 8 km / about 8 minutes on the same planning list. I am not turning this into a three-way comparison. If someone in your group says Hermosa, ask which Hermosa. Nicaragua has more than one. Confirm the pin before you leave the hotel.

Getting there

From town or from the hotel, people use taxis or a hotel shuttle. I am not printing taxi fares. They change with time of day, rain, and whether you are going north or south. Ask at reception, or ask the driver, that morning. Build a little slack if you have a lesson time.

The airport choice is a separate decision. Managua (MGA) or Liberia (LIR) is the first article in this series. The stay page lists about two hours from MGA and about three hours from LIR (border included) as planning ranges. Traffic, rain, and the border queue all move those clocks. For a current transfer quote, use the airport shuttle page with your real dates and headcount. Different Surf Ranch pages have disagreed on start-from prices, so I am not printing a dollar amount.

Everyday travel here is in Spanish, UTC−6, with U.S. dollars and Nicaraguan córdobas both in use. Power on the official stay notes is 120V / 60Hz. Confirm cards and cash with your bank before you rely on a blog for that.

How to choose

Choose Remanso if you are a beginner, a mixed group, or you want a shorter morning. The destination page’s beginner-to-intermediate beach-break description, the closer planning distance, and the current surf-package lessons all point that way. Still check the swell that morning. A “beginner beach” on a hotel page is not a babysitter.

Choose Maderas if that is the beach you actually came for. Intermediate-to-advanced, lefts and rights, farther north. If your friends keep saying Maderas, do not split the difference and stop at town beach. You will get a pretty bay and the wrong session.

If the group cannot agree, you can do different mornings. These are not a two-hour expedition from San Juan del Sur. They are different directions from the same town. What you should not do is assume one taxi stop covers both.

In the green (rainy) months, roads and river crossings around the coast can change. Confirm the pavement the week you go. A paved label in September does not tell you what a storm did last week.

I am not ranking these beaches. Crowd counts, water quality, and which peak is “better” belong to the morning you are standing there, and to a live report, not to a comparison post.

This is also not the Popoyo decision. If you are still choosing a town, go back to San Juan del Sur or Popoyo. Remanso and Maderas are San Juan del Sur beaches. Popoyo is a different stretch of Pacific in Tola.

If you are staying at Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur

Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur is one hotel in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. Not the Popoyo property. Not Tamarindo. Check-in is 2:00 p.m. Check-out is noon.

On property: pool with a swim-up bar, waterslide, restaurant and bar, skatepark, gym, climbing wall, volleyball. Walk-up day pass entry is free. Large groups pay $15 USD per person in advance, and that amount goes to consumibles (an open tab).

Overnight All Inclusive is three meals plus beer, rum drinks, juice, soda, and coffee, plus the swim-up and the gym. It is not unlimited drinks. It is not every amenity. Write down the beach, then the airport

Before you pack the board bag, write two lines.

First: Remanso or Maderas (or town beach, if the week is not about a surf beach at all).

Second: MGA or LIR.

Those are two different decisions. Get the beach right and you still need the right airport. Get the airport right and you can still spend three mornings at the wrong sand. San Juan del Sur is straightforward once you stop treating “the surf beach” as a single pin on the map.
