San Juan del Sur Travel Guide: Where to Stay, Surf and Explore
Most people find San Juan del Sur the same way: a friend's photo of a horseshoe bay, a fishing fleet bobbing at anchor and a white statue watching from the north headland. Then the questions start. Where do you sleep, which beach do you surf, how do you get there from the airport, and is a week too long or not long enough?
We have written about this town for years, and the answers are now spread across dozens of articles. This page pulls them together.
Start with the shape of the trip
San Juan del Sur is a small town on a bay in Nicaragua's Rivas Department, and the best surf beaches sit outside it, north and south along dirt and paved roads. That single fact drives most of the planning. Before you book anything, read San Juan del Sur town vs the beaches, which explains what changes when you sleep in town versus near the sand.
From there, work out how long to stay. How many days you need in San Juan del Sur lays out short, medium and long trips, and your first week in San Juan del Sur turns that into a day-by-day rhythm. If you are fitting the town into a longer route, the Nicaragua itinerary with where to stay each night covers 7, 10 and 14 day versions, and why San Juan del Sur works as a base city is our older case for staying put and day-tripping out.
Still choosing between towns? These comparisons do the heavy lifting:
- San Juan del Sur or Popoyo, for travelers torn between a town on a bay and a quieter surf coast
- San Juan del Sur or Tamarindo, if Costa Rica is also on the table
- Combining Costa Rica and Nicaragua on one surf trip
- Surf towns in Nicaragua and where to stay for the waves you want
When to go
Nicaragua's Pacific coast has a dry season and a green season, and both have fans. Dry season or green season in San Juan del Sur is the place to begin. For month-specific planning, read five myths about Nicaragua in November and Nicaragua in December: weather, holidays and where to stay. Visitors arriving in early December should not miss PurÃsima and La GriterÃa in San Juan del Sur, one of the liveliest weeks of the local year. Our 12 months of Nicaragua is an older month-by-month overview.
Getting here and getting around
Two airports serve the town: Managua in Nicaragua and Liberia across the border in Costa Rica. Managua vs Liberia: which airport for San Juan del Sur compares them honestly. From Managua, Managua to San Juan del Sur by bus, shuttle or car covers every option, and our time-lapse of the drive to Managua shows the road itself. From Costa Rica, read the Liberia airport shuttle guide and the short video on crossing the Costa Rica and Nicaragua border. For flights, see which cities fly nonstop to Managua.
Paperwork and cash come next. Nicaragua entry requirements for 2026 covers passports, the online form and the entry fee, and Nicaragua money and currency explained covers córdobas, dollars and tipping. Once you land, getting around San Juan del Sur without a car explains taxis, shuttles and walking. Surfing San Juan del Sur
The town beach is for swimming and boats. The surf is up the coast. Beginners should read is San Juan del Sur good for beginner surfers first, then Remanso or Maderas, which compares the two beaches most people end up surfing. The best time to surf Nicaragua explains how wind and swell change through the year, and surf camp or surf hotel helps you plan a learning week. When the ocean goes quiet, what to do in San Juan del Sur when the surf is flat has plenty of ideas. Skaters should look at the skateparks and skate scene of Nicaragua our 5-night surf and skate retreat and the film of Nicaragua's first skate camp.
Beaches, viewpoints and the water

- Playa Marsella, for a quiet beach day north of town
- Playa Gigante, as a day trip or an overnight

Staying with us at Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur
Surf Ranch San Juan del Sur sits inland on the edge of the jungle, about 3 km from downtown. It is not on the beach, and that is part of the appeal: there is room for a pool with a waterslide, a skatepark, a climbing wall and a gym. Our stay page lists the town beach at about 3 km, Remanso at about 5 km and Maderas at about 9 km. Surf lessons run at Remanso and last 1.5 hours, with the board and transport included.
You can see rooms and details on our San Juan del Sur stay page, and booking through our direct booking page earns 2% back in Surf Ranch Rewards. If you just want a day by the pool, the day pass runs 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and costs $15 per adult and $10 per child aged 2 to 12, with under 2s free. The full amount comes back as food and drink credit. Airport transfers are on the Surf Ranch shuttles page, and the team answers on WhatsApp at +1 657 688 0230.
Curious about the place itself? Take the one-take drone flight through the resort or read 10 reasons to stay at Surf Ranch, Chris Haslam's review, Canadian families embracing the Nicaraguan lifestyle and our experiment in vacationing on Bitcoin. The backstory is in how we built a resort in Nicaragua at 21 and the Hotel Brothers documentary trailer. And if you arrived here looking for the wave pool in California, read how our Surf Ranch differs from Kelly Slater's.
Our advice for a first visit is to read three guides before anything else: town vs beaches, how many days, and the airport comparison. Most of your other decisions follow from those three.
